Analysis and evaluation in accordance with the LEAP approach

In FY2024, Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post applied the LEAP approach on a trial basis in line with the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to analyze the dependencies and impacts of their main business activities on nature.
We applied the LEAP approach to our main business activities in the four segments of the postal and domestic logistics business, post office business, international logistics business, and real estate business. Analyses were conducted using ENCORE* for each segment with respect to upstream supply chain operations and our direct operations to first identify dependencies and impacts on nature and business alike, and then risks and opportunities were evaluated (as of April 2024).

*ENCORE:An analysis tool for nature-related risks developed by the Natural Capital Finance Alliance and others.

Major dependencies and impacts on nature identified

Considering the characteristics of the businesses based on Japan Post Group's nationwide network of post offices, Japan was identified as an important location, and analyses were conducted to determine the major dependencies and impacts on ecosystem services.

  • Dependencies: Various ecosystem services of forestry; water use related to manufacturing paper and delivery vehicles; surface water/groundwater related to manufacturing building materials; agricultural functions for infection prevention, pest control, soil quality, and pollination; fishery functions for habitat maintenance and mass flow maintenance; functions for climate regulation, etc.
  • Impacts: Waste generation/GHG emissions/air pollution related to the construction of post offices and manufacturing of delivery vehicles and work uniforms, water contamination/air pollution due to waste from post offices, etc.

Major risks opportunities and , Countermeasures

The following table provides a summary of risks and opportunities associated with the business activities of Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post, which were identified based on the analysis of dependencies and impacts on ecosystem services. Also, we have identified "paper, "plastics," and "metals" as material materials, in reference to the High Impact Commodity List provided by the SBTs for Nature* and based on numerical and other data for a range of items related to procurement and waste.

*SBTs for Nature, or Science Based Targets for Nature, refers to a framework for setting science-based targets related to nature.
